Social Justice/Advocacy/Civil Rights
The Vietnamese American Roundtable, or VAR, founded in 2013 in San Jose, envisions a strong and unified Vietnamese American community that works towards improving the quality of life for all. To this end, VAR focuses its mission to organize, advocate, and educate our community. We accomplish this through mobilization, advocacy, and education -- mobilization through events and coalition-building, advocacy through empowerment and strategy, and education through facilitating panels, workshops, and cultural events. VAR's multilingual programs and events across Santa Clara County and the Bay Area aim to address and heal from intergenerational trauma tied to the experience of being refugees, immigrants, and their descendants, notably through the planning and organization of the annual Black April Commemoration of the Fall of Saigon, Lunar New Year Festival, Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, and Student Engagement and Education for Development and Success (SEEDS) Summer Youth Program.
