About
Santa Monica Playhouse is a not-for-profit, professional intimate theatre and educational conservatory, envisioning a future in which theatre and the artistic process is utilized by all people as a unique tool with which to explore the human condition with the full power of the imagination, unfettered by the barriers of prejudice, custom, fear, isolation and ignorance, celebrating our diverse and shared cultures and traditions. To this end, the Playhouse concentrates its efforts in three areas: the creation of superior and exciting, accessible and affordable theatre, the maintenance of an educational conservatory program, and the sharing of the magic of live theatre through community outreach in theatrical and educational settings. Through our commitment to these principles we strive to originate exceptional, innovative, consequential theatrical experiences that are essential to the health and evolution of individuals and their local, national, and global communities. It is the foremost commitment of Santa Monica Playhouse to manage an outstanding professional theatre, developing and presenting the finest and most innovative plays from classical, contemporary, or unique and unusual sources, especially those not usually be seen on the Los Angeles stage. The Playhouse encourages the development of new and important theatre by providing a positive milieu in which new playwrights may create significant theatrical works. The Playhouse maintains a resident company of professional theatre artists and craftspeople seeking to create art of social and personal relevance, to expand the horizons and language of theatre as a means of expression, and to provide our audience with the most engaging, ambitious, and rewarding experience possible. Santa Monica Playhouse is furthermore committed to nurturing the development of new artists by providing a year-round educational conservatory for all students of theatre, offering the highest quality of creative-educational environments, ranging from introductory workshops devoted to facilitating the theatrical process in an atmosphere of warmth and commitment, to theatrical training and career development on a professional level. The ultimate goal of our Diversity-in-Education conservatory is to re-introduce today's mass-media oriented society to the wonders of the living stage, and its potential as an enriching tool for sensitivity, creativity, personal exploration, equity and inclusion. The third and over-arching commitment of Santa Monica Playhouse is to the greater community. The Playhouse believes that the power of the creative process as a constructive tool is not limited to the realm of professional theatre, to this end teaching theatre in a variety of educational settings, including the public school system, kindling motivation and leading young people towards renewed self-esteem, fulfillment, and respect for others, providing low and no-cost presentations to socio-economically disadvantaged youth, families and seniors, involving community members in free workshops, performance art and all aspects of the creative process. We believe that through our ongoing outreach program, we provide individuals and communities with an eagerness to strive and grow, a passion for self-expression, dynamic tools to face obstacles and resolve conflicts, and a sense of focus and purpose as they use the creative process to meet both the daily and the exceptional challenges inherent in our shared humanity.
