The Coastal Watershed Council, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was formed in 1995 with a mission to protect coastal watersheds through community stewardship, education and monitoring. In 2013, CWC focused this mission on revitalizing the lower San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz, CA.‚ÄØThe river is the‚ÄØprimary source of drinking water for 100,000 residents, is critical habitat for endangered species‚ÄØand its adjacent Santa Cruz Riverwalk park provides opportunities to connect with nature in the heart of Santa Cruz's downtown business district and diverse riverside neighborhoods. Yet, the river and Riverwalk park have been neglected for too long. Today, CWC is the only organization that is solely focused on the revitalization of the river and Riverwalk. CWC's four programs consist of water quality improvements, habitat enhancement, youth empowerment and community building.
